1st Ilex Deputy District Judge
I am very pleased to see that Ian Ashley-Smith has been the first Legal Executive to be appointed by the Lord Chancellor as a Deputy District Judge on the South Eastern circuit. Very well done Ian!

It looks like a load of old monkeys to me!
Well the holiday’s are now over and it’s back to work.
I feel rather chuffed with myself. I have been asked to speak at the Costs Litigation Funding Conference on the 21st October along side such high profile speakers as His Honour Michael Cook; Lord Justice Jackson, Master Peter Haworth and Nicholas Bacon QC. For those who are not in the know this is the oldest and most established premier costs conference. It will be the first time as far as I know that Lord Justice Jackson will be speaking publically since the publication of his mammoth Report on the suggested changes of Civil Costs, so it should be very excited. Michael Cook suggested that I talk about budgets and cost capping. I said, of course, that I would be delighted to handle this subject but because of my extensive experience in dealing with Detailed Assessments I cheekily suggested that maybe some insider information might be useful. Kain Knight undertakes about 20 DA’s a month and very few every get reported some there are some real gems.
This is what he replied “Your proposed talk is everything I have ever wanted from a costs draftsman’s talk but have never had! It will be worth the price of admission alone”.
No pressure then!!!!
Last weekend I spoke to my cousin Vic. Every time I think of Vic I think of the time that I went to Sunday lunch with him. His mother was staying with him and was some what old and fragile. After the lunch we sat down to watch Vic’s new TV. Half way through the film “Planet of the Apes” Vic’s mum comes out with the classic “What’s this then, Vic” “It’s Planet of the Apes, Mum” says Vic. “Henry the Eighth! Looks like a load of old monkeys to me”
